Delivered to the Southern Pacific in 1972 this massive SD45T-2, 20 cylinder locomotive weighed in at a commanding 410,000 pounds! Manufactured by General Motors' Electro Motive Division (EMD) this locomotive was specifically designed to solve over-heating problems in long tunnels and snow sheds. Notice the radiator vents along the walkway at the rear of the engine. Previous locomotive models would overheat when going through tunnels due to the fact that they were pulling in extremely hot exhaust and air from the top of the tunnels. The resulting modifications allowed the locomotive to pull in the cool air closer to the ground and solved the overheating problems outright. This beautiful black and white photo was taken in San Jose, California, sometime in 1979, by an unknown, but very talented photographer.
